My Diary Enterprise Worlds / Nationals Looe 2006

Friday 28th

Left home at 19.00.everything fine until roadworks on the M4 traffic down to one lane.Arrived at Tiverton travelodge 24.00

Saturday 29

Up at 7.00 down to breakfast, bumped into Glen Cole. Left travelodge 8.30. Arrived in Looe 10.00. Tight drive through the narrow streets, unloaded boat.and set up. Found good berth. Off to park up Trailer. Parked in car park made way back to the beach to assist with scrutineering. Told to move boat !!!! Ended up far end of Promenade furthest berth - NOT HAPPY

Assisted Paul Young and Keith Tyler with scrutineering. Light rain falling, not good. My boat passed - YES.

Went off to find accommodation. Not where I expected it to be only accessible by driving out of Looe to St Martin's.

You could walk down a steep hill to get into Looe but not ideal 20 minute walk. Accommodation top class though.

Fish & Chips in Restaurant.- Lovely

Went to the clubhouse for welcome speeches.

Sunday 30

Nice day bright and fine

Launched from beach, out to the start for the practice race. Got away well . Good beat average reaches kept out of trouble.

30 boats behind me - Not bad

First Race

Started late good first beat roughly halfway in the fleet. Lost out on the reaches, lost jib stick and Alan Skeens picked it up. I had to identify it. Happy with position - about 40 boats behind.

On shore found out boats disqualified for sailing wrong course.

Revised position 55 - Well Happy

Monday 31

Wet and quite windy

Janice out on the rescue / gate rib with Dominic and John

Second Race

Good start through the gate went right, arrived at the windward mark halfway up the fleet.

Lost out on the reaches but enjoyed the racing.

Finished 64- Still Happy

Third Race

Good start again. Kept out of trouble mid fleet at the windward mark lost out on the reaches but had a good final beat

Finished 55 - Better

Janice had a good day out on the rib got some excellent shots

Tuesday 1

Sunny and mizzly rain

Went down to the beach - quite windy.

Launched. Saw someone capsize launching

Fourth Race

Really blowing running out to the start - knuckles whitening. Loads of capsizes and boats returning to the beach, we plowed on

to the starting area. Had an excellent start alongside Steve Graham / Tim Hartley. Good beat halfway in reduced fleet.

Blistering reach up to the gybe mark. Two boats went over at the mark, just enough room for us to gybe though, fantastic!! Even Nick Craig tacked round at this mark. Reachy run to next mark with a big swell. Hair-raising stuff. We worked hard up the next beat to the finish, on a shortened course. Excellent sailing

Finished 34

Ordered ashore because the rescue boats were very busy.

What a day. Checked the overall results - 44 after four races, must be dreaming I will wake up soon.

Wednesday 2

Bright and sunny no wind

Planning to sail two races today to catch up on yesterday

Janice went out on the rib at 8.30

Launched at 9.00

Wind fluctuating all the time did not fill in until 12.00

Fifth Race

Started the race at 12.15

Last boat out of the gate next to Jonathan / Alex, went right and arrived at the windward mark halfway again.

Good first reach bad second reach lost twenty places boats high and low of me. Not bad on the final beat clawed a few places back.

Finished 61

Sixth Race

Good start out of the gate again, halfway in the fleet, lost out on the reaches, then a bad beat, an OK run, then another bad beat.

Finished 84 - Disaster back down to Earth with a bump. Always tomorrow!!!!

Thursday 3

Bright sunny and very windy

Race officer called a meeting and postponed racing off until 2.00. Lounged around in the sun with Jan.

Seventh Race

Finally launched at 3.00. Quite windy but manageable. Good start again, kept out of trouble, halfway up the fleet at windward mark.

Worked hard on the reaches, and followed the fleet on the beats.

Really good result 45

.In the top half of the fleet overall, I don't believe it !!!!

Friday 4

Bright and sunny light wind

Two races scheduled for today.

Went on the water at 11.00.

Eighth Race

Wind shifting around force 3

False start problem involving the pathfinder

Good start just off the back of the gate boat. Went right, arrived at windward mark TOP20 Don't believe it!!!!!!!!!!

Set off up first reach, lost a couple of places, second reach lost another couple of places. Good next beat and run back on sausage, pulled back to 19th with one beat to the finish. Got excited took middle option, lost 10 places.

Still finished 29th - Ecstatic highest finish ever.

Ninth Race

Another false start

Got away late and went right with Sadler / Sault tacked in line with the pathfinder and went round windward mark in

13th position. Fantastic sight looking back at nearly 100 Enterprises

Worked hard up the first reach held position

Second reach lost out to Steve / Judith Venables and Ann Jackson / Alan Skeens. Still Ray and I worked hard up the next beat and sausage maybe lost another couple of places, we just can't believe how well we are doing. Final beat to go, went left and then right following Steve / Judith not taking any chances.Crossed the finish line just after Ann / Alan .

Finished 21st

Congratulated by Dominic and John in the rescue rib.

Looking back and seeing all those Enterprises behind was fantastic. There are usually that many in front of us.

Second Enterprise in the Silver fleet race 4

Second Enterprise in the Silver fleet race 8

Second Enterprise in the Silver fleet Race 9

Overall Result 41st out of a fleet of 112

Second in the Silver fleet overall

Best ever Championships for Ray and me. We are still pinching ourselves to wake up!!!!!!!!!!!!
